Kitchen Cabinet Buying Guide

Who says kitchen cabinets must be permanently attached?  There are many cabinets that are designed to match any décor, available in many sizes and don’t require a carpenter.  In fact, many kitchen cabinetries are no longer permanently attached in new home construction.  So what exactly is it you should be looking for if you discover you’ve outgrown your current cabinet space?

Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you expand the storage space in your kitchen area.

While the idea is two-fold – freshen the look of your kitchen while also adding additional storage, you want to be sure your current kitchen can accommodate ready made kitchen cabinets.  Naturally, if you’re doing a complete cabinet overhaul and are eliminating your current layout, you’ll want to have at least a few kitchen cabinets that do attach to your wall area.  But if you’ve simply run out of room and need a quick and affordable fix, there are many to select from.  In fact, there are many floor to ceiling kitchen cabinets that are freestanding and are a breeze to assemble.  With adjustable shelves, the sky’s the limit.

Ideally, if your current kitchen houses cherry cabinets, you’ll either want to match the grain or select pre-painted cabinets.  If you wish to brighten the room up, why not consider a lovely French white finish?  These are easily coordinated with nearly every wood finish.  Of course, you have the option of selecting other painted cabinets too.

Is privacy an issue or does an open kitchen cabinet appeal to you?  Many love the idea of open cabinetry that doubles as both a storage area and a way to show off an eclectic mix of collectable dishes, stoneware or other kitchen items.

Finally, depending on where you plan to incorporate your new kitchen cabinets, you might want to add a drawer or two, perhaps a series of three or more drawers and a single cabinet.  Again, it’s all about what works best for you and your home.
